Babylon fortress was built by Roman Emperor Trajan (98-117).
Now there are two towers of the original Western gate are left.
Most of the towers are buried under earth, as the level of the
land was much lower by the time it was built by about 10 meters
(33 feet).
St.
George church, belonging to the Greek Orthodox community,
currently tops the northern tower of the fortress while the
southern tower in now in rubbles.
