The mosque was finished in 879. It is a remarkable mosque
and one of the largest in Egypt. It dates back to the Tulunid
period and was built by Ahmed
ibn Tulun (ruled 868-884).
The glory of the mosque lies in its intact condition relative
to its early building date.
