The church is believed to be built in the 7th century AD. Its ownership was referred to the Greek Orthodox since the 15th century.

In the past the church used to incorporate services to the public as a hospital.

However in the early 20th century the church suffered a fire and it was rebuilt again. It is topping one of the old Roman towers of Babylon Fortress and thus it takes a unique circular shape.
