Barquq is the first Burgi Mamluk. He reached power in 1382 after a series of plots and murders, something that was usual in Mamluk eras.

His madrasa follows the same artistic architectural school of his predecessors decades before the Burgi Mamluk art develop and gain unique characteristics. The madrasa was finished in 1386.

A daughter of Barquq is buried the mosque while Barquq himself and some family members are buried in a mausoleum built in the northern cemetery.

The place is currently in restoration and not admissible to visitors.
