The barrages are 16 km (10 miles) north of Cairo
and are located on the Nile just before it splits to form the
two branches of Damietta -to the east- and Rosetta
-to the west-.
Mohamed Ali
built the first barrage, and the second one was built early
in the 20th century as part of agricultural and irrigation reforms
carried out by the British.
The Barrages have a wonderful set of bridges and parks. The
lush gardens make it an ideal place for relaxation and picnics.
Locals like to come here to enjoy bicycling -rentable here-
and felucca journeys.
