It was built by St. Makarius the Great in the 4th century and restored later in the 9th and 11th centuries.

The monastery has many bodies of deceased monks. The most remarkable of them are the remains of 49 martyrs, who were killed by Berbers in the 5th century. The monastery was once the seat of the Coptic pope.
