It is a remarkable octagonal fortress-like building. Inside, soldiers are buried in mass with symbolic representation of their regiments, in alcoves, each contain 3 stone graves. And in the center, an 11.5 meter-high (37.7 ft high) obeliskWhat does it mean? is set to commemorate the Unknown Soldier.

Panels hanged over the memorial have engraved names of approximately 4,200 German soldiers

To the right side is a small chapel for honoring the dead. The building is on a hill overlooking the sea.

The memorial is designed by Robert Tischler, principal architect of the German War Graves Commission.
