El-Alamein is about 100 km (62 miles) west of Alexandria. Here a fierce
and decisive battle took place between the Allies and the Axis
in the World War II.
The Allies under the command of Montgomery defeated the Axis
under the command of the desert fox, Rommel, in November 1942.
The battle changed the course of the war in North Africa to
the advantage of the Allies. Tens of thousands of soldiers died
in the battle.
In reminiscence of the battle, several war memorials (cemeteries)
stretch in the site.
Warning: Do not wander off the beaten road, because some of
the war mines are still unexploded.
