The museum is situated on a hilltop near the old CataractWhat does it mean? hotel. It was constructed under the auspices of UNESCO at the aim of preserving and illustrating the civilization and heritage of the NubiaWhat does it mean?.

The project cost about 60 million L.E. and was inaugurated on 23rd November 1997. The building of the museum is distinguished for its Nubian-style architecture.

The museum displays about 3000 artifacts, not only belonging to the Nubian regions. The museum has also a gallery dedicated for contemporary work of Nubian artists, an academic library and an open-air theatre.
