The museum is situated on a hilltop near the old Cataract
hotel. It was constructed under the auspices of UNESCO at
the aim of preserving and illustrating the civilization and
heritage of the Nubia .
The project cost about 60 million L.E. and was inaugurated
on 23rd November 1997. The building of the museum is distinguished
for its Nubian-style architecture.
The museum displays about 3000 artifacts, not only belonging
to the Nubian regions. The museum has also a gallery dedicated
for contemporary work of Nubian artists, an academic library
and an open-air theatre.
