The monastery is near the city of Al-Quseyya. Virgin Mary
and Jesus are said to have stayed here for 6 months and 10
days in a small cave. This happened after they fled the persecution
of King Herod and came in Egypt.
The small church built in dedication to Virgin Mary (El-Adra
in Arabic) is believed to be one of the early churches of
the world.
Beside the church there is the 5th century square keep that
has also a small chapel dedicated to Archangel Michael.
The monastery has also a church dedicated to St. George (Mar
Guirguis). It was built in the 1880s.
Every year thousands of pilgrims flock to the monastery to
celebrate the consecration of the church of Al-Adra.
"
Out of Egypt have I called my son." (Mt.
2: 15)
