The monastery is built by Saint Shenouda in the early 5th
century, probably at 441 AD. Stones from Pharaonic temples
were used in its building.
The monastery is 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) north of Sohag
City. It once had 2000 monks. The fortress walls of the monastery
still stand.
And like all other Coptic
monasteries, this one has many churches.
The monastery retains its name from the color of its building,
hence came the name Deir
El-Abyad which means "The White monastery."
It is also called the monastery of St. Shenouda.
