It's name means called "The Red Monastery." It is
3 kilometers (1.8 miles) north of the White Monastery. Few things
remain from the original construction which is dated back to
the 4th century. The monastery is also named after Coptic
Saint Bishai who repented after living a corrupted life.
The name of the monastery (red) is driven from the color of
the bricks used in its building. The monastery has several churches.
The main church has interesting frescos ,
albeit dimmed, and many ancient icons. |
